What was the weather in 1910? A Digital reprint of the book "A Century of Weather Observations in Monaco" is now available
On the occasion of its 50 year anniversary, the Centre Scientifique de Monaco launches the full text of the book "A Century of Weather Observations in Monaco," published in 1988.
This book, unavailable for many years, now becomes available for reading and downloading on the CSM website.
It was written by Dr. Nicole Bethoux, currently Lecturer at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, but then head of the Observatory of Seismology and Meteorology at CSM.
This book discusses the history of meteorology in Monaco, on the climatology of the Côte d'Azur as well as meteorological equipment used by researchers at CSM. It presents the changes in the weather (temperature, precipitation, wind, sunshine, snow ...) in the Principality from 1911 to 1985.
From this book we learn that the minimum temperature recorded at the Oceanographic Museum was
-4°C on 11 and 15 February 1956 and the maximum +34°C, was recorded twice, June 29, 1945 and August 3 1949.
Of the 30 episodes snowy identified, two were particularly important, especially in February 1956 and in January 1985 when a height of 18 cm of snow was measured at the Exotic Garden on January 8th Human memory is rather unreliable with respect to weather, so reading this book will provide the young and old to discover or rediscover the Monaco weather and see if the French saying "Christmas on the balcony means Easter will be hot " applies in our principality…
