CSM invited to "The Metaorganism Frontier" meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Two researchers from the CSM, Drs. Christine Ferrier-Pagès and Jeroen van de Water were invited to participate in the international workshop «The Metaorganism Frontier» at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.

There is a multitude of studies that support the notion that host-associated microbes provide functions related to metabolism, immunity, and environmental adaptation to their animal and plant hosts. The workshop, co-organised by Professors Christian Voolstra and Carlos Duarte (Red Sea Research Center), therefore gathered researchers from KAUST and international experts in microbial ecology to discuss new concepts and future research directions in the field and to gain a better understanding of the interactions (diversity, function and evolution) between microorganisms and their host macro-organisms such as corals, plants and insects. The outcomes of the workshop are likely to be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals this year. As part of the workshop, a research conference had also been organized showcasing the current state of knowledge on host-microbe interactions and microbiome regulation to the KAUST research community, where Dr. Jeroen van de Water presented his work on the pathogen-filtering capacity of seagrass meadows.
