Dr. Hilmi, invited to a high-level scientific conference

International Conference "From COP21 towards the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)" organized by the IOC-UNESCO and the Ocean and Climate Platform

Nathalie Hilmi has been invited as a High-level speaker and expert to participate to the international conference « From COP21 towards the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) », organized by the IOC-UNESCO and the Ocean and Climate Platform.

Since COP21, new knowledge has enhanced our understanding of the interactions between ocean, climate and biodiversity. The conference aims at synthesizing recent scientific progress on ocean and climate interplays; evaluating the latest ocean-climate trends within the context of increased ocean action; and reflecting on ways to move “from science to action”. Organized around four sessions, the event brought together scientists from multiple disciplines, civil society, businesses, decision-makers and UN entities, to share their expertise on ocean and climate related issues.

Nathalie Hilmi spoke in session 2 about  « An international organisation perspective on ocean, climate and biodiversity knowledge ».

Intergovernmental processes such as the IPCC and the IPBES play a key role when it comes to delivering the latest available scientific evidence to policy makers. IPBES regional and sub- regional assessments provide potential policy response options to the degradation of the coastal and marine environment. The integration of the ocean in the Paris Agreement led to the creation of a working group within the IPCC for the preparation of a Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate. What else can be done to strengthen the science-policy interface? This session featured contributions from key players of the scientific community on how to achieve an integrated perspective on ocean, climate and biodiversity.

Her intervention was about “The human dimension in the impact of climate change on the oceans, from ecosystem services to sustainable development goals”.
